Sierra Leone move up in Fifa ranking

Leone Stars

By Mohamed Fajah Barrie in Freetown

Sierra Leone have moved eighteen places up in the ranking released by World’s football governing body, FIFA on Thursday.

The West African country with a population of about seven million people is now joint 90th in the world with Guatemala and 25th in Africa.

This is as a result of Leone Stars’ 1-0 victory over Sudan in Freetown last month in the penultimate round of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Leone Stars will face African Champions Les Elephants of Ivory Coast in the final round of qualifiers in Bouake early September.

A win for Leone Stars will see them qualify for January’s AFCON finals in Gabon, and will again move up significantly in the FIFA ranking.
